NEW LEGENDS OF KUNG FU MASTERS: "PEREIRA SE COMPLICA EM CURSO DE MANDARIM" (PEREIRA gets himself complicated in Mandarin course)

"Pereira, if I filled the Mo Gun with a million students, financially it would be great, but maybe I did not have this time with you here to hear you."

That was what Si Fu told me once when I talked with him in his room in the old  Mo Gung in Jacarepagua neighborhood. And Si Fu was right, I never failed to be impressed about how "Kung Fu life" lets he knows us better.

In the photo above, we see the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba in the left side and the other person in the photo is Morihiro Saito, one of his principal disciples.

Saito was very dedicated to training, and work on railway lines, and used this advantage to spend more time with his Master while the others practitioners used to go home after training. Often Saito got to take care of the garden of Ueshiba without him asked or promise anything since Ueshiba was very strict.

Saito over the years became one of the most respected masters of Aikido, with many considering the true heir of the traditions. But even if this story is resumidissima and poorly written, only serves to tell me an interesting passage:

Legend said that Saito was eating something with the founder of the Aikido at an outdoor fair, when Ueshiba saw a young woman and suggested that Saito should marry her. Saito thought he was joking, but Ueshiba insisted , Saito went there without knowing why and after a while he married her ...

"Bem feito! Quis desafiar a professora!" (muitos risos).

In 2004 I realized my dream to start studying Japanese language, a study that I update daily even today. However, Si Fu always said that I would earn more studying Chinese, and only in 2006 I follow his suggestion and with Paula Gama(12G VT) and Xenia D'avila(12G VT) and Si Fu, started studying Mandarin in our Mo Gun with the teacher Lily Ou Yee Fen.

After a while ended up staying in the class just me, Paula and Si Fu, and classes were running at a intense and crazy pace. Prof. Lily had the "Chinese way" under the skin: "Jump now to page 60!" (Where we were in page 27) - "Now back to page 14!"

-Teacher, in Mandarin we had present continuous? -I asked once
-No. No need!

A few weeks later:
-So here it is written "He's calling" - taught her.
-But teacher, you said that in mandarin there is no present continous! - I asked.

-Now you have! Now you have! - Answered her without patience.

The great thing to learn Chinese is not trying to bring the Western model, let it flow.

On another occasion in 2007 I questioned her work:

-Teacher, we have still not seen a lot of radicals of the ideograms.

-Radicals! Oh Radicals! - She exclaimed, clenching her small eyes in my direction.
Man, Si Fu smiled and shook his head and opened his laptop that means leaving me alone to suffer the consequences ...

-This is radical! - She said pointing to a sheet which had made an ideogram.

After that, she made 116 ideograms always correlate radicals and saying "radical!" "Here! Radical!"

When she left, Si Fu almost died laughing looking at me with that sheet in the hand full of ideograms:

"Well done! Wanted to challenge the teacher!" (Much laughter).

The Peartree´s "Epic Fail" teaching in a mandarin course.

In late 2007, a friend of mine from college was teaching English in a very famous language course , and asked if I was interested in trying to teach Mandarin because there were open seats.

Si Fu thrilled with the idea and encouraged me as always lending me a lot of material to study and prepare myself. My Mandarin was really good at the time, but my insecurity remained high to teach it.

Professor Lily gave me permission to teach Chinese just two years after starting classes in intensive regimen with her. So I got a letter of introduction as a teacher trained by the  Ma Siu Fuk Institute.

(rs)

I also remember that Si Fu went to Mo Gun one day before my interview to guide me and give more study material.
The next day I had the interview with one of the owners of the course, but not before he is delayed for an hour and a half, and I called to Si Fu saying "Si Fu, he did not come, I'm leaving."

and he answered: "Pereira, trust me, wait a little longer!"

I was approved in the interview, but before that would have to give a class to the course coordinator.

Actually was a great smalltalkie about the "new Chinese teacher", because in fact at the time was difficult to find someone to teach it here... So when people saw me with my face, I could see in their eyes they thought, "Is this the teacher of Mandarin?this guy? " (lol)

E pensando nisso essa semana, me pergunto o quanto de fato me deixei acreditar no Si Fu nessa história toda.

The coordinator enjoyed my class, and I was allowed to start teaching there. I would give classes in two branchs, and on my first day, had 30 students interested in only one of the branch. Since elderly people to children (really!)

And until I was doing well, but after 40 minutes of class I hear someone open the door and say, "Dui Bu Qǐ! Dui Bu Qǐ!" (对不起) (" Excuse me! ")

It was a girl with 4 years of Mandarin who spoke perfectly well. All I can say is that suddenly, 30 people in the room became to me 3000, and I never felt myself so afraid ...

I would like to gave up and start to running away. The words were missing, and I did not want to be there ... I started to mess up the class to pass the time, all because I was afraid about the girl and her Chinese pronunciation "from hell" ...

Needless to say,I stood up bravely till the end and came back for another class, but when I arrived there was only one person: Phelipe Pita(12G VT), my younger Kung Fu brother...

30 people did give up simply because I was  afraid of her and transform the classroom just a runaround.

After that never came back and ended up "burning my movie"*(*brazilian expression when you mess up with something or somebody). And those times you see how the emotional feeling escape from you sometimes. Like, just because the girl entered the room, finished with a career that was being good up there ...

Si Fu all the time gave me every support and encouragement trying to show me that it was easier than I thought, but I ended up letting the fear and insecurity me win in this story. And maybe if I could know how much "I lost" would have an idea of the price that I paid (and perhaps even pay).

At bottom, from the beginning I did not want to go from the beggining because I did not believe that I could take a class in that course, although the Si Fu thought otherwise. And thinking about it this week, I wonder how much actually let myself believe in SiFu in this story.

Maybe I could be a little more "Morihiro Saito" in that episode.

You know, no matter if your master seems to believe or see something in you and a potential situation that may seem crazy. No matter if he asks you to marry a stranger, or if him encourage you to teach Mandarin. The important thing is thought: "I might be scared and think that will go wrong, but Si Fu believe me, I wonder what he is seeing and I cant see."

Open your heart!
