Um de seus alunos na vida real Sin Kwok Lam, um mega empresário chinês, sempre quis fazer um filme sobre seu Si Fu com quem treinou por 7 anos. Muita gente porém, não queria comprar a idéia, pois não acreditavam no potencial de sua história, mas o homem de negócios sempre falava sobre os inúmeros discípulos de Ip Man espalhados pelo mundo, e apenas tempos depois conseguiu recrutar o diretor Wilson Yip e Donnie Yen para estrelar o filme. Sammo Hung ficou sendo o coreógrafo.
One of his students in real life, Sin Kwok Lam, a big chinese businessman, always dream of make a movie about his Si Fu, who trained him for 7 years. Nobody gives credit for the idea, and just sometime later, he could get Wilson Yip as a director, and Donnie Yen as the star, and also Sammo Hung for the fight scenes!

Os produtores afirmam que foram escolhidos apenas artistas marciais de qualidade. O próprio Yuen Biao(centro) formado na Ópera de Beijing, diz que o ator(a esq.) que interpretará o jovem Ip Man (leia Clark Kent) é melhor em Ving Tsun que Donnie Yen,mas não atua tão bem....Mas agora chega de papo e assista ao trailer!
